Backstory
Piper was close to her mothers, Jessie and Wynona, and spent a lot of time with them playing all kinds of board games. From checkers, to Parcheesi, to multi-player puzzle games! She'd always have to be her favorite color in checkers, or a specific piece with other board games. She had a favorite of almost everything! Her parents found it adorable, and would make sure not to use her favorite spoon or fork when they made her favorite foods.
While Piper was a young kid, she started having thoughts that terrified her. Sometimes while riding in the car she felt it was going to crash, or during windy days there'd be a tornado that wiped away the town, or even how a bridge she was walking on could collapse at any minute. It didn't help that she overthought things too. Was she annoying her friends? Was she being too loud? Piper eventually talked to her moms about these thoughts, and she was soon diagnosed with anxiety, and was put on medication to help the intrusive thoughts.
Puzzles helped her cope with her intrusive thoughts on those bad days. She loved filling out the puzzle books she could get at the store! Word searches, cross words, sudoku, and everything in between! There was hardly a puzzle book she didn't like. She also liked to make puzzles for her parents and friends to solve, and loved when they did solve her puzzle. When she got into video games, Piper loved showing her parents how to play them, and watched how they solved a game's puzzle too.
There was one kid in school that Piper made quick friends with. She did everything with Rona! Rona was able to help think of creative ways for Piper to ignore her thoughts, while Piper shared her favorite things with Rona. Piper eventually made them both matching friendship bracelets. That way, no matter what happens, they'd stay connected somehow. They promised they'd always stay friends!
Piper was devastated when Rona told her that her family was moving. So what if her father was getting a better job? Couldn't Rona and her mom still live here in Marina instead of going to Unity? She didn't want to lose her best friend! Piper unfortunately couldn't change anything, and the two of them made a pinky promise that they'd see each other again someday. She was happy they could at least stay in touch though phone calls.
During the winter when Piper was twelve, she was shivering, thinking about how a nice and warm fireplace would be nice to sit by. She didn't realize that she held a small flame in her hand until her parents pointed it out. She was ecstatic to discover that she could conjure fire that day! She could help out in all sorts of ways! Boil water anywhere, always have the ability to warm up when it's cold, and even warm up food if it got too cold!
Piper was excited to show off her magic to the other kids at school, but quickly regret it when a few of the kids kept saying that no good ever comes out of fire. While it was only a small handful of them that said it, that thought stuck with her. No matter what she did, it kept creeping up in the back of her mind. She quit using her magic at school, and never talked about what she could do. It especially didn't help that she'd lost Rona's contact, and couldn't even talk to her best friend about all this.
After highschool, Piper stayed with her parents. She was comfortable living there, and enjoyed the company. She wasn't sure what she wanted to do, so she helped her parents around the house while looking into what she should do for a living. One night, she was walking down the street, messing with a stress ball she brought with her. She witnessed a robbery at the bank she was near, noticing a purple haired guy with a scar on his face fleeing from nearby. She fled the scene, not wanting to get pinned for the crime, and didn't realize she dropped her stress ball.
Piper noticed her missing stress ball the next day and went looking for it. She wasn't able to find it in the area, but did spot the purple haired guy and decided to follow him. If she could find evidence of where the bank thieves were, maybe the people who lost their money could get it back. She followed him all the way to Unity Casino, then went though the back.
She found a locked gate, melted the lock enough to get through, and went searching. Before Piper knew what happened, she was surrounded and fighting the group who caught her snooping. Her magic came in handy until she felt her own hand being burned. She couldn't do anything to stop the pain. She caught a glimpse of the guy she was tailing as the group cleared out. When the police arrived, she was framed for the bank robbery, breaking and entering, and harming some of the group.
Piper was locked up and had her charred hand amputated when they weren't able to save it. Even though she couldn't use her fire due to the prison negation magic, her story spread across the prison, and she was given the nickname Ember. It hurt when she found out her old childhood friend worked there as an officer. She didn't know what Rona would think of her now, but she was happy to see that Rona was still wearing the friendship bracelet. Ember hated that hers was burned up when her hand was scorched.
Ember chatted with Rona whenever she could, and eventually got a new friendship bracelet from Rona. She was let out of prison under Rona's supervision, and moved in with her. While living with Rona, Ember got a prosthetic hand that took her awhile to get use to. Her handwriting may never be the same, but she was happy to have two hands again. She told Rona about the gang, and learned that the casino was run by the Blackjacks. She helped Rona however she could to find out what they were up to.
Rona soon got Ember a job doing glassblowing, and Ember quickly fell in love with her work. She'd make all sorts of things in her free time, and soon had a small glassblowing area built next to the house. She'd often make things for Rona, or her parents and friends. After living with Rona for a little bit, Ember asked her out on a date, and the two of them soon started dating.
Ember and Rona still live happily together, and Ember's still trying to learn more about the Blackjacks and how to get back at them.
